THE PROCESS
Recycling is always better
The costumes of Hmong People is carefully chosen to attract the finest fabric patterns from. Each costume can only be used to make a very limited number of product, some are unique.
Batik drawn by beeswax & indigo dyeing
It’s an amazing story behind the product. With a particular technique, H’Mong women will directly create on fabric. Beeswax will be heated into melted liquid then used as a type of fantastic ink to draw on white fabric. H’Mong people use special pens (top of pen is copper which is better for retaining heat) to draw decorative patterns. When all drawings are dried, they shall dye the fabric by indigo. Because the beeswax on fabric is still maintained while dyeing process, then they shall put the product in hot water and the beeswax melts, leaving white patterns on indigo background.
After finishing batik drawing process, the artisan shall dye the product by indigo. The colour is pressed from the leaves and fermented, before being mixed with lime and various natural additions to make the resultant paste soluble. Once this is complete, the dye is ready for use. Through indigo extract, the fabric is blue, so for about one month with same section, the fabric is dark black and then transferred to cloth burnishing. Depending on how dark the artisan wants to make the material, repeated dyeing and drying may be required. Dark color may take 1 month for the dyeing process.
From traditional costumes of Hmong, our artisans create stunning product with highly eco-friendly value.
Please Note: Every item is one of a kind and no two are alike. The dyed palette comes from all-natural botanical pigments, and each product gets its unique character from washing and drying under the Vietnamese sun. Handmade items are not factory made; therefore these items may have minor imperfections that add to their vintage charm.
